When summer's tomatoes are "ripe and luscious," they can make a regular steak taste like something fantastico!
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: Californian
Author: Barbara
Ingredients
  • 1 Lb or more sirloin steak or another tender cut
  • 4 robustly flavored tomatoes, halved I used Romas
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • ½ cup fresh basil, chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
  1. Oil the grill. Heat the grill to medium high.
  2. In a saute pan, using one tablespoon of oil, sauté the onion and garlic until golden.

  3. Toss in the basil.
  4. Grill the steak about 8 minutes per side for medium rare, which is 145 degrees F. Season lightly.
  5. Meanwhile, place the tomatoes on the grill with cut sides up brushing them lightly with oil.
  6. When the tomato starts to soften, turn them and let them cook through.
  7. Remove from grill and chop them, then add to the onion mixture stirring.
  8. When steak is done, let it rest up to 10 minutes.
  9. Slice it thinly and serve the slices topped with the tomato relish.
Recipe Notes

We served a Big Basin Syrah, which we love.  Their Zinfandel would be great also.
